High School Mission Trip 2016
We took the most awesome trip to Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu, New Mexico, June 19-25! Working with Ben, Kennedy, Stephanie and Justin for the Youth Service Corps, we spent most of our 20 hours of service on the Ranch helping to re-purpose a building and dig the holes for the footers for a new yert following the flood they experienced last summer. These two buildings will become part of the new art hub at Ghost Ranch. One of our days was spent working at Christ in the Desert Monastery, weeding and gardening, mostly in silence, at the Guesthouse.
We got to attend the prayer service after lunch at the monastery, walk the labyrinth for morning watch at the Ranch, play Capture the Flag in the arroyo, test our mettle at the high ropes course, ride horses through the desert and into Georgia O'Keeffe territory. We paddled our canoes and swam in Abiquiu Lake, and took in the spectacular views of Cerro Pedernal, Chimney Rock (which we hiked), Orphan Mesa, Kitchen Mesa, and Pack's Peak.
We worked hard, played hard, met new friends (hey, Zoe!), listened to the coyotes at night, met up with a couple of snakes along the way, saw the beautiful strawberry full moon on the summer solstice, enjoyed the great food in the dining hall, had lots of fun, enjoyed our friendships old and new, and drank lots and LOTS of water!!!
It was a GREAT experience - one we won't ever forget. We are very grateful for the generosity of so many at APPC and beyond who helped make the trip possible, and we look forward to sharing our experience with you!
